The 2018\/2019 Sicilian table grape campaign opened with early greenhouse varieties, a product distinguished by its unique taste and aroma, capable of conquering even foreign consumers. We spoke about this with Salvatore Novello, owner of the Novello & C.<\/a> company in Mazzarrone, in the province of Catania, a market leader with his project for the recovery of authenticity for the Made in Italy table grape. <\/p>\n

Which varieties opened the new campaign?<\/p>\n

With the classic early varieties: Victoria, with yellow, elliptical berries, with medium-thick skin and high Brix, and Black Magic, a black berry variety, with a slightly acidic and bittersweet aftertaste. In addition to these, some seedless batches are already in production. <\/p>\n

How does the product look?<\/p>\n

This year, the product looks uniform from an aesthetic and organoleptic point of view. The shape of the bunch is quite generous, and the berry set is good. The season promises a very healthy product. At the start of the campaign, we are seeing a high caliber and slightly higher sugar content compared to last year, when the product was more heterogeneous. <\/p>\n

What are the expectations, then, for the new commercial season?<\/p>\n

In the greenhouse, there is an excellent product, so the start of the campaign is quite lively, even if the market is rather flat concerning prices. Today, there is already product availability everywhere, and there are no longer those commercial voids in which you could insert yourself well to be more competitive and achieve better prices. If we talk about aromatic varieties, the Italia grape wins the comparison even with the seedless varieties. <\/p>\n

Production forecasts?<\/p>\n

Commercialization started two weeks ago (straddling May and June, editor’s note), from the first to the second week we recorded a doubling of volumes. Now the campaign is getting into full swing. The product, as mentioned earlier, looks good, both in terms of volume and quality. The dry and ventilated season favors the absence of phytosanitary problems. There have been some adverse climatic episodes, where strong winds caused damage to some systems and coverings, but despite these difficulties, the prospects are good. We believe we can replicate last year’s numbers, when approximately 10 thousand tons of grapes were commercialized. <\/p>\n

How is production divided, speaking of the different varieties?<\/p>\n

The Italia grape is our core business, representing 55% of production. Early varieties, Victoria and Black Magic, cover about 30%. The remaining part of the production is made up of seedless grapes (Sugraone Seedless) and the Red Globe and Big Perlon varieties. <\/p>\n

What are the reference markets?<\/p>\n

For several years we have consolidated our presence abroad, “neglecting,” so to speak, the Italian market, where volumes are always limited. Over 90% of our production is destined for export: we are present on the Swiss, German, and French markets, known for their rigorous criteria for selecting suppliers. Speaking of large-scale distribution (GDO), we are present in the main chains, such as Auchan and Monoprix in France, and Migros in Switzerland. We are also present in more distant destinations such as Arab countries, South Asia, and North America. <\/p>\n

And in Italy?<\/p>\n

We are distributed in traditional markets and some supermarkets in Northern Italy.<\/p>\n

Bringing the original taste of grapes back to consumers’ tables: hence the name Autentica, the brand under which you market the Italia variety. Is this your mission? <\/p>\n

Yes, with the Autentica project we intend to enhance the aromas, fragrance, and unique taste of Italian table grapes. Characteristics that the market currently rarely finds in seedless grapes, which are highly popular today. With “neutral” tendency grapes, the head-to-head competition with seedless is inevitably open, but if we talk about fragrant varieties, Italia is still winning. <\/p>\n
